Calendario Romano: Gaio Luglio Cesare

Calendario Romano e festività antiche: Luglio
Estate.

Ne avevano ben donde di allenarsi all’esultanza.
Ludi Victoriae Caesaris duravano dieci giorni.

Ancient Roman festival calendar: July
Summer. Rome has always been warm and in sight of Feriae Augusti , July was the last time you did something that was not idle. Indeed, on reflection, have dedicated this month to the great Julius Caesar , leader, reformer and conqueror (the calendar among other things, in 46 BC), shows how important it was to the period.
Let the days and major holidays, for our monthly column . After a curious celebration of the still mysterious "escape of the people" ( July 5 , Poplifugia ) sailed out Apollinares Ludi, 6-13.Games at the Circus Maximus , in honor of the god Apollo, in time became a central deity in the Augustan Roman paganism.
During the games there was also room to celebrate Caprotina Juno (the ninth ), patroness of female fecundity, with an archaic ritual in which the priests of the affected branches of wild fig for her to drip milk plant, and soon after was honored Vitulo , the goddess of glory and exultation of victory. Two days, 10 and 11 , of Vitulatio .

They had good reason to train exultation. Because the second part of the month was a whole collection of victories to celebrate. Let's start with 15 , Virtus et Honor , the first dedicated to the god Honor, which Fabius Maximus dedicated a temple after the defeat of Liguria in 234 BC, and therefore also the god Virtus, when a dozen years later he consecrated him Claudius Marcellus with the victory over Insubres.
But these were just skirmishes. After a refreshing break from the sacred groves between 19 and 21 ( Lucario from Lucus, wood) that took place in the forests between the Tiber and Salaria (Villa Ada remains there today) here is the party, even the holidays of the month.
The Ludi Victoriae Caesaris lasted ten days. From July 21 until the end, 31 . Games and celebrations in honor of the infamous Caesar's victories over the Gauls, Germans and Britons. In short, the Roman Europe.

Do not forget, however, also two holidays dedicated to water deities. An element that the Romans have always had a special relationship. The 23 hailing the god Neptune, former protector of the water currents, with a temple in the Campus Martius (often the same day the Romans, meeting comitia were going to vote.) And the 25 we celebrated the goddess Furrina, other archaic goddess of water.
